Jost Van Dyke Preservation Society Sloop News

December 2005

During a midterm break in late November, the students built an extension shed to act as a laminating area to manufacture the hull frames.

The BVI High School's Technical Department in Roadtown started to get wind of the project and came to see what all the fuss was about. Before two two's could be said they brought students to the sloop to see about doing all the metalwork for the boat. They school has an active metal shop with almost twenty students enrolled in welding and machining classes. They plan to do all the fittings and metal work for the boat, from keel bolts to steam head fittings, gugens and pintles, and chain plates at the school as part of their 2006 studies.

The day after school closed for the three week holiday, the sloop's crew of students got into to a big push; to complete all the frames and timber before heading back to school.
